ABOUT CHEROKEE METROPOLITAN DISTRICT
Cherokee Metropolitan District provides water, wastewater collection services, parks, street lights, open spaces, and even a golf course. To us, it’s more than that. Cherokee Metro District is our community.
We are not only customers or ratepayers; we are neighbors.
WATER MAIN BREAKS
For example, when a water main breaks, we are all affected. Some of our neighbors may be without water for an extended period of time and are immensely inconvenienced. When such an event causes damage, we pull together as a community. Typically, a water main break is a “no-fault” event. This means, as a government entity, Cherokee Metro District has legal immunity and is sheltered from liability for the cost of damage. However, we should not leave even one resident without support.
PINYON JAY WATER MAIN BREAK
When the large water main break event occurred on Pinyon Jay Drive on January 28, 2022, it affected 20 homes and caused damage to most. In that event, the previous Board of Directors determined payment to homeowners on a “case-by-case” basis. The payment amount, if the cost of a particular item was damaged enough, and if they felt the homeowner was deserving of payment, was left to one board member and some staff to decide. Our neighbors were not treated fairly and were even harassed if they complained. It was a sad and shameful episode in the District’s history. We must never let it be repeated.
SIGNIFICANT CHANGES IN THE PAST YEAR
Cherokee Metropolitan District has made extensive changes in the past year. One important change centered on two problem board members and they were successfully recalled. The recall was a far-reaching grassroots effort. Neighbors from all over the district worked on the recall effort that culminated in two new board members being elected. The new board was finally able to make sweeping changes. They cleaned house! As a result, the District has new management, a new CFO, and new legal representation. The progress has been impressive, but there is more to do!
IT IS IMPORTANT TO HAVE A BOARD OF DIRECTORS THAT LOOKS OUT FOR US
This all begins and is driven by a competent and engaged Board of Directors who are elected by and represent the ratepayers and the citizens. They represent us! Cherokee Metropolitan District belongs to us. This is about our homes and our neighbors.
